Just like with laryngoscopy, there isn't just one way to perform a pharyngoscopy! The two main types you might hear about are indirect pharyngoscopy and direct pharyngoscopy, with flexible endoscopy being a common way to perform the latter.

If you're having a direct pharyngoscopy with flexible endoscopy, you'll likely be sitting in a chair in the office. We'll spray some numbing medication into your nose or theterritorian.com.au throat, depending on the approach, to make the procedure more comfortable. Then, the thin, flexible tube with the camera will be gently inserted through your nose or mouth and guided down to your pharynx. The camera sends live pictures to a screen, so we can see your pharynx and the structures around it moving as you talk or swallow. You might be asked to speak, cough, or swallow during the procedure to help evaluate the function of your throat. The whole process usually takes around 5 to 10 minutes and isn't typically painful, though you might feel a bit of pressure or a slight tickle in your nose or throat.

As we've discussed, laryngoscopy is a primary way to examine the vocal cords, which are essential for speech and breathing. These delicate folds of tissue vibrate to produce sound when air passes over them. If there's a problem with your vocal cords, it can cause changes in your voice, make you sound hoarse, or even make it hard to speak at all. Laryngoscopy lets us see how your vocal cords move and what they look like, which helps us find any problems. This is really important for diagnosing conditions like when your vocal cords aren't moving properly (paralysis), or if there are growths like nodules, polyps, or cysts on them.

For indirect pharyngoscopy, you'll typically sit upright in the examination chair. Your doctor might spray a local anesthetic in your throat to help reduce any gag reflex. Next, your doctor will carefully put the small mirror into your mouth and use the light from their headlight to get a good view of the back of your throat. You might be asked to extend your tongue or make specific sounds during the examination to aid visualization. This is usually a quick procedure, often lasting only a few minutes, and while it's not typically painful, you might feel some pressure or a mild tickling sensation.

Patient Group Recommended Frequency Reason
People with recurrent sinus infections Twice yearly Monitor condition
Allergy patients Once per year Assess inflammation
Structural abnormality patients As needed Determine surgery need

Maintaining Nasal Health Between Exams

Taking out your tonsils (tonsillectomy) is a common surgery for people who keep getting sore throats, have trouble swallowing, or have breathing problems because their tonsils are too big. Similarly, adenoidectomy, the surgical removal of the adenoids, is often recommended to address chronic nasal congestion, recurrent ear infections, or breathing difficulties, particularly in the pediatric population.

Simply put, pharyngoscopy is a way for us medical professionals to get a good look at your pharynx – that's the part of your throat behind your mouth and nasal cavity, above the esophagus and larynx. By performing this examination of the pharynx, we can get a clear picture of your throat health and pinpoint any problems that need attention in this specific area.

Steer clear of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, as they can significantly irritate your throat.
Try not to yell or strain your voice too much, as this can put unnecessary stress on your vocal cords.
