If every incarnation of Link is treated as essentially the same character, then there are very few playable characters in the core The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Korok seeds franchise. The sole major alternative is Princess Zelda Tears of the Kingdom online guide in Spirit Tracks , where players are able to guide her in possessing Phantoms. Aside from this, Makar and Medli are briefly playable in The Wind Waker , as is Kafei in Majora’s Mask . Meanwhile, in the Hyrule Warriors games, many more popular characters are playable. For example, Age of Calamity allowed players to take control of the four Champions, who each boasted a unique playstyle with their signature weapons and various abilit

Unfortunately, the possible inclusion of more traditional dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom may also cut into player freedom of exploration slightly - especially with Link's new abilities potentially allowing him to access to spots that would typically be hard or impossible to reach. Like BOTW 's Divine Beasts, which were each sectioned off behind story events and instanced separately from the rest of the world, TOTK 's dungeons will likely need to limit Link's access to them in some way. While it may not be a major problem, it may create situations similar to BOTW 's Vah Medoh not actually being interactable if it's reached outside normal me

Another interesting possibility is Paya, who could herself be seen as Impa’s successor. Although the timid Sheikah was only a supporting character in the story of Breath of the Wild , the sequel offers an excellent opportunity to develop Paya as a character. With the remnants of the Yiga Clan potentially still a threat even after the death of Master Kohga in BOTW , Paya could become a central character in a storyline focussed around the deep schism between her people and their disaffected cousins. The Sheikah are simultaneously one of the most notable and mysterious of Hyrule’s various races, and such a quest could provide an interesting insight into their cult

The final trailer to be released ahead of Tears of the Kingdom shows numerous familiar faces from Breath of the Wild , including side characters such as Riju and Sidon. Notable absences so far include Yunobo and Teba, although the latter’s son, Tulin, appears to have replaced him as Link’s ally. Another prominent face was Zelda, who appears to have found herself living alongside Zonai despite the tribe supposedly being extinct. Along with other clues such as Link’s new time-rewinding Recall ability, this seems to indicate that Tears of the Kingdom will include time travel as a major plot point - something which could also lead to the introduction of another Princess Ze

Assuming that this Hylian is indeed an ancient Zelda, then this opens up the possibility that she is in fact the Princess who initially sealed Calamity Ganon 10,000 years prior to Breath of the Wild . With TOTK being a direct sequel to BOTW , this makes perfect sense; such a plot point could easily shed light on the events which ultimately lead to Breath of the Wild . This would presumably include how the body of Ganondorf came to be sealed underneath Hyrule Castle, and so also explain the roots of the Upheaval in present Hyr

Moreover, in relation to the game's story, the dungeons of Tears of the Kingdom appear to each be associated with one of the apparent Champion successors. Of the three revealed in the trailer - Sidon, Riju, and Tulin - Sidon and Tulin can both be seen accompanying Link in certain sections of the game, with Sidon in a water-themed area, and Tulin flying next to Link in the sky. And although Riju and a currently-unknown Goron (likely to be Yunobo from BOTW ) haven't been seen in any dungeon so far, the large building seen rising out of the desert, as well as the underground magma area, seem likely candida

Of course, there is also the near-certain possibility of entirely new characters being introduced to TOTK to consider. For example, with so much focus being placed on the Zonai Tribe in Tears of the Kingdom , the introduction of a member of this seemingly extinct civilization in some capacity is logically a strong capacity. As time travel could play a role in TOTK , even if the Zonai tribe is truly extinct in Hyrule’s present, it does not entirely preclude Link from encountering them. Alternatively, players could instead control a Zonai through some sort of flashback sequence taking place in the tribe’s hey
