During Robyn's daily radiation trips, we watched the hill be "downsized". Arrived at the Wellington Cancer Society carpark in good time. We were surprised to see the new building development at Wellington Hospital - across the road from where we parked. It is still in the tear down stage and the rooms we used to visit are now being torn down. After getting a chest x-ray done, we had our first visit to the recently opened Cancer Outpatient Department. That has been the first part of the new hospital to be built and the rest of the new hospital will be built around it. Robyn saw Dr Douglas Iupati. He said that Robyn's chest X-Ray looked good. Once again he did not have Robyn's blood results. She had those done last week at Masterton Hospital. We are not sure which hospital is at fault. Might need to check that one out. He had to ring for them and said that they looked fine. Robyn's legs are still itching and she is scratching them until they bleed. She has a few on her arms too. Robyn said that it is most irritating at night. Her legs get hot, then they itch. Douglas said it was unusual but none of us feel it is related to any cancer activity. However, to rule out that possibility, he has ordered Robyn a CT scan (chest and abdomen) to be done by the end of the month. He also mentioned that it might be wise to repeat the bone marrow test. Robyn is going to try and tackle the itchiness with some creme she has been prescribed by her GP and also use some medicine that must act like an antihistamine. I bet when we ask for the blood results that they will have to go searching and even ring through to Masterton ! They never seem to make it into her patient chart. I believe that Robyn's only concern at this stage is her weight, which has increased. We are both looking forward to seeing what progress has been made with the Kaitoke roadworks. A section of State Highway 2 on the northern side of Rimutake Hill Road will be down to one lane from Tuesday 7 November until 16 December. Work is being done to stabilise a steep bank close to the highway. As far as radiation dose goes, she did not need to get the maximum dosage as the cancer cells in the lymph nodes respond well to low doses. I was told that melanoma patients need a maximum dose in their treatment as it takes that much for the cells to react. Didn't I say it was technical ? I found it actually quite interesting. During the set up, the room lights were put out so the red laser lights could be lined up with Robyn's marks. During the radiation, the lights were on and Robyn had contact with staff via an intercom into the office. Robyn said that she had to lie very still and consequently had a 'serious' facial expression most times ! Wednesdays were 'weigh-in' days and Fridays were see the doctor days. She had x-rays taken during the first 4 or 5 treatments to make sure she was lined up right and therefore the right areas were getting the radiation. Her throat got a bit of a "funny" feel after a few days, but the worst damage was self inflicted a week before treatment finished. Robyn had popped a piece of roast lamb into her mouth and it got stuck in her throat as she swallowed, was hotter than she thought and burnt where it got stuck. This was like pouring boiling water on sunburn. Ouuucchhhh. Robyn was extremely upset that this happened. She managed to eat the roast meal, but in the few days after it was just too sore to eat at all and drinking cooled down drinks was an effort. Her throat has only just come right now - two weeks later. Apart from that, Robyn did not have any serious side effects. Her last day was meant to be Tuesday 6 April, however she was asked to come back for two more treatments which targeted the sternum area (deep) and she finished on Thursday 8 April.
