Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora ** __ ** marks Ubisoft's foray into the world of James Cameron's Avatar , and the game seems to have picked the perfect protagonist for this journey. Originally announced in 2017, this title by Ubisoft subsidiary Massive Entertainment has, like the Avatar sequel films, spent a long time gestating. Pandora is a planet teeming with alien flora and fauna, and creating that environment in an open-world scale is a demanding task. Now that the game's release is actually on the horizon, details like the playable character and narrative are becoming clear for the first time.

The newest information about Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora comes courtesy of Ubisoft Forward 2023, which highlighted a number of upcoming games from the company and revealed a couple of new trailers from this flagship project. Among the information showcased __ was the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora release date and gameplay, which ranges from harvesting the rich resources of Pandora to militaristic gameplay that recalls the Tom Clancy's The Division games that Massive Entertainment is known for. All of these features look promising, but the biggest standout might be the angle the game's story takes to immerse the player in the world.

Related: Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora Can Be Ubisoft's Super Mario Odyssey

The Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora Protagonist Is The Best Of Both Worlds

Shared on the official Ubisoft YouTube channel, the "World Premiere" trailer for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora reveals that the protagonist is a Na'vi raised by the interloping human faction of the RDA. This approach gives players access to both sides of the Avatar world, offering them proficiency with militaristic weaponry and equipment as well as the unique strength of the Na'vi. Waking up after fifteen years of cryosleep, this player character can explore the world of Pandora and fight the RDA with bows and guns alike. This journey also works as one of self-discovery, focusing on the Na'vi character rebuilding the connection to her home planet.

The World Premiere trailer and the accompanying overview trailer, also available on the Ubisoft YouTube channel, highlight both angles of combat and a number of other Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora gameplay features that this perspective offers. One shot highlights an explosive takedown of a helicopter with a rocket launcher seamlessly followed by a midair strike with a bow, establishing that these abilities are meant to be used in tandem to maximize gameplay potential. Some players may ultimately prefer to stick with the familiar military technique or fully embrace the Na'vi style, but either choice or any mixture should be readily available.

Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora Uses Cameron's Approach To Immersion

The use of a Na'vi protagonist with an RDA background takes an important lesson from James Cameron's Avatar movies, which follow the originally human character Jake Sully on his journey in Na'vi society in a Na'vi body. Entering with this perspective allows the audience to experience Pandora through the eyes of someone equally unfamiliar with its wonders, minimizing any possible disconnect in the highly sensory experience while focusing the story around the Na'vi rather than the comparatively familiar RDA. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora 's Na'vi protagonist achieves a similar effect, as the game's exploration can be new for both the player and in-game character without losing out on the Na'vi angle.

The Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora approach might even improve on some criticisms of the film by getting away from the baggage of a "white savior" narrative, setting a Na'vi on the path to be the hero of her people rather than a character from another world. Her unfamiliarity with her own planet will let players experience the thrill of a first flight like Jake Sully's banshee ride in the original film without having to retread the movie's central gimmick. The word "avatar" may not even be particularly relevant here, but the focus on finding a way to reveal a new world to the audience is definitely being targeted once more.

Frontiers Of Pandora Can Improve On The Previous Avatar Game

[https://Optimusgolfers.com/ Avatar Frontiers of Pandora collectibles]: Frontiers of Pandora isn't the first attempt at bringing the world of Pandora to life in a video game, with Avatar: The Game initially launching as a movie tie-in slightly ahead of the first film's release in 2009. Without the same luxuries of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora 's development delays , the original game brought interesting ideas to the table but failed to deliver on its maximum potential. Rather than bridging the Na'vi and RDA experience in one protagonist, Avatar: The Game opted to allow two different paths, with players choosing to fight for [https://Optimusgolfers.com/ https://Optimusgolfers.Com/] the Na'vi or RDA in the battle for the planet.

Although this angle isn't without its own benefits, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora 's approach holds more inherent potential. Avatar: The Game failed to explore the sin of supporting the RDA's conquest in a particularly robust way. This isn't a particularly surprising shortcoming, as the split development priority in telling two sides of the story would inherently make it more difficult to make either one hit as hard as it possibly could. Honing in on one perspective that encompasses both gameplay experiences merges the benefits of either playthrough while allowing Massive Entertainment to focus on perfecting a singular narrative.

Why Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora Needs To Capitalize On Its Protagonist

Massive Entertainment hasn't previously been known for its story chops, with the narratives of The Division games serving as more functional than inspiring. With Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora , it's important that the effective choices being made around the protagonist and narrative are ultimately well-utilized throughout the game. The culture of the Na'vi offers more compelling possibilities than the world of The Division , and using the protagonist's unique perspective and the lengthier runtime of a game could augment the films' limited window into this world in a way that significantly enhances the gameplay experience.

Although Ubisoft may show off more of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora 's story and characters ahead of its December 7 release, players won't know for certain just how effectively the game delivers on its promise until they can get their hands on it. The experience is certain to be expansive, and weaving a strong narrative through its world might be a task as difficult as it is promising. For now, fans can take comfort in the fact that _Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora _ has set itself up for success with a choice of protagonist that offers significant potential for the best player experience.

Source: Ubisoft/YouTube , Ubisoft/YouTube

Though the next Avatar sequels are still many years away, Ubisoft is taking you back to the Na'vi's home moon with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora . This series from James Cameron is one of the most visually stunning pieces of science-fiction film, and the studio behind Star Wars Outlaws , Massive Entertainment, is now adapting the universe into an equally gorgeous new game.

The Ubisoft Forward event showed off six minutes of gameplay and cutscenes from Frontiers of Pandora with narration from the game's director, and many new details emerged in that short clip alone. There was exciting combat, new area reveals, systems and mechanics, and much more to be discussed.

10 Aerial Combat And Weapon Variety

Mimicking the set-piece battles in the films, you will engage the RDA's airborne vehicles in combat while flying on ikrans. You can wield your bow and target weak points on the Samsons or any other aircraft that might appear in the game. Additionally, there was a weapon wheel reveal and showcase of other weapons aside from a bow in action.

For stealth, you have the long bow weapon and a new weapon type called a staff sling, which launches objects and explosive traps (presumably like sticky bombs or mines). AMP suits can be taken down with assault rifles, pistols, shotguns, and a rocket launcher, and you can pull the RDA soldier right out.

9 Echoes Of Far Cry

After the reveal, everyone's initial thoughts turned to Far Cry , one of Ubisoft's biggest series, and there are a few reasons why. Ubisoft tends to stick to its formula when it comes to game design, and what carries over here are the FPS design and the RDA facilities you need to destroy, akin to liberating enemy outposts in the Far Cry games.

You can see your character stealthily moving around different kinds of RDA facilities that are causing harm to the environment, and they also seem to come with alarm boxes you'll need to disable by pulling out the wiring. This FPS Far Cry comparison is the most worrying aspect of the game .

8 Survival Elements

As a species, the Na'avi are not only warriors but hunter-gatherers, and this will become a perfect aspect of the game. It might not be the most realistic survival game with its premise and all the alien life found on Pandora, but hunting animals, gathering various fruit and plants, and making food are mechanics implemented here.

Early on in the trailer, you see a character prepared to strike their spear into a riverbed to hunt some fish. Other creatures can be hunted with a bow-and-arrow and there are allusions to bigger and more dangerous new creatures you can try to kill. The food component looks like it has specific areas where you can cook.

7 Parkour And Water Traversal

The new footage revealed environmental traversal on foot that created some striking moments, even a recreation from the movie. There are a lot of parkour elements to play around with in the Pandoran biomes. You can even cross the thick Beanstalk bridges and jump from leap pads to provide an extra boost.

The parkour in first-person seems as engaging as Dying Light 2 , especially since you can slide, though we've yet to see if you can kick enemies. You also find out you can swim in the game during a brief shot of your character swimming in a murky river, which can mean different aquatic enemies may appear.

6 Multiple Customizable Mounts

[https://optimusgolfers.com/ Avatar Pandora Hub] is as much about the RDA as it is about the fauna and living in symbiosis with it. The movies show that Na'vi form bonds with several mounts, including the majestic winged ikrans and direhorses, as well as the aquatic Skimwings and Ilu from The Way of Water. The game so far has revealed the former two mounts will be available.

You can perform tricks and spins with the ikran mounts in the air, and they'll even have customizations. When riding your mount, there's an interesting shift in perspective. You tame the direhorse or ikran in the first person, but the perspective automatically switches to the third person as you ride.

5 Gorgeous New Regions Of Pandora

This Avatar game will showcase the new area of the Western Frontier of Pandora, as the second movie revealed the Metkayina Clan's Eastern Sea home of the Reefs. It doesn't look like you'll be able to visit the stunning ocean of the Mekayina, but the Western Frontier has many beautiful locations of its own in store.

Some of the new biomes introduced were an overgrown cavernous mangrove area, the radiant bioluminescent Kinglor Forest, the lush red and green grasslands of the Upper Plains, and the misty Clouded Forest densely populated with flora and fauna. Each looks absolutely amazing, thriving with new species of creatures that will make for exciting exploration.

4 Discovering New Na'vi Clans

All these new areas open up opportunities to meet new Na'vi Clans to strike alliances with. The trailer reveals three already, along with the area in which they reside. First is the Aranahe Clan that dwells in the Kinglor Forest, who are peaceful weavers that teach you survival skills and how to ride an ikran.

Next is the Zeswa in the Upper Plains, who are nomadic and live in harmony with the grassland's wildlife and introduce you to the direhorse mount. Then in the Clouded Forest is an ominous Kame'tire Clan made up of healers who are said to have "dark reasons to stay hidden."

3 Co-Op Multiplayer Action

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora comes from Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment, a developer known for co-op multiplayer titles that previously helmed Tom Clancy's The Division third-person multiplayer shooter games, and they're bringing a bit of that into Frontiers. Massive also developed Far Cry 3 , so that's probably where those influences come in.

The trailer reveals that the story campaign has the option for a single-player story experience or an online multiplayer adventure with your friend. This is narrated over a clip of two Na'vi characters flying together on ikrans by the Hallelujah Mountains.

2 Skill Upgrades Through Neural Link

The detailed gameplay also revealed how the skill upgrades would work. One of the skills displayed in the trailer was a combat focus of a dark blue cloud highlighting enemies in orange. You'll probably be able to get an enhancement for it, and you can do this by the Na'vi way of attaching your hair's neural tendrils with a Tarsyu plant.

The Tarsyu plant acts similarly to the underwater Spirit Tree from The Way of Water and the Tree of Souls but is a large flower pod whose long petals open and come apart to reveal the stem your queue connects to. It's a clever way of including it as a mechanic while also allowing you to unlock memories as the true purpose of these connections.

1 Standalone Story In The [https://optimusgolfers.com/ Avatar Frontiers of Pandora mounts] Film Universe

Among the most surprising moments during the Frontiers of Pandora Ubisoft Forward was when James Cameron popped in with a message about the game. The creator of the Avatar universe himself confirmed that this game is a standalone story exploring RDA expansion in a new region set within the timeline of the films.

The basic overview of the story so far is that you were a young Na'vi taken from your family by a villainous RDA member named John Mercer to turn against your people and adapt to human ways of life. You eventually escape and slowly need to readapt to your Na'vi culture, allying with clans and taking on the RDA's destruction of the environment. Similar to Jake Sully, you're perceived as an outsider and need to earn the Na'vi's trust.

NEXT: There Shouldn't Be Any Humans In [https://optimusgolfers.com/ Avatar Frontiers of Pandora guide]: Frontiers Of Pandora

In 2008, James Cameron released his ambitious blockbuster Avatar . The action-packed epic was structured around a science fiction-based allegorization for colonialism, all set against the backdrop of an alien planet called Pandora. The film was a huge success, beating Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time and elevating 3D technology to more than just a simple marketing gimmick. Although the film's initially positive reception would eventually give way to a hateful bandwagon, its success made it clear fans had not seen the last of Pandora. A sequel seemed inevitable, even if it took over a decade to make.

RELATED: Everything Confirmed for Ubisoft Forward So Far

However, it turns out The Way of Water is not the only opportunity fans will have to revisit the alien landscape this year. Ubisoft has finally revealed their upcoming game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora , an open-world adventure that promises free exploration of Cameron's iconic world . The trailer and gameplay reveal can only show so much, but there are some fascinating details that can be uncovered about just what fans can expect from this exciting game.

The Na'vi, a race of blue-skinned gigantic humanoids indigenous to Pandora, have always been crucial to the lore surrounding Avatar . Their conflict with the RDA is what drives the entire plot, but it is still a story about humans. The original film's protagonist started as a human, even if he ended up preferring his Na'vi body (the titular "avatar"), and he had several human allies that made up the core cast.

Frontiers of Pandora shakes things up. The protagonist is not a human in a Na'vi body, but an actual Na'vi. Granted, they are a Na'vi who grew up under unusual circumstances that resulted in a limited understanding of Na'vi culture, but they are not an Avatar, nonetheless.

The story expands on Na'vi culture as seen in the film. In addition to exploring the world, the player will get to interact with different Na'vi clans who all have their own unique customs and beliefs. This does mean, at the very least, that a large portion of enemies will be human. Whether any human allies will appear is unknown. In any case, the Na'vi will be at the center of it all, and for once, players will see matters from a Na'vi's perspective.

Admittedly, information on the player character is a bit vague. Her name has not been revealed, but everything shown so far has indicated the player character to be a female Na'vi who appears to be a capable fighter.

RELATED: Avatar 3 Producer Reveals First BTS Image Amid Film Delays

She does, however, have an unusual background. This character was part of an RDA project that involved kidnapping Na'vi children and raising them to become soldiers that fight against their own people. This puts the player in an interesting position . On the one hand, she is fully equipped to take on Pandora's wilderness, but on the other, she has to learn alongside the player.

In the movie, the primary antagonist was the Resources Development Administration (RDA), a mega-corporation that specialized in exploiting other worlds' resources. Their interest in Pandora was motivated by a desire for unobtainium, a rare mineral that is worth a fortune on Earth, and this is what sets the main conflict in motion. The RDA proved to be ruthless, having an entire army at its disposal under the command of Colonel Quaritch. The final battle ended with them being forced to leave, with the exception of a few open-minded individuals.

That said, if Frontiers of Pandora is anything to go by, the RDA did not take defeat well. Fifteen years later, it appears they're back in full force, probably wanting payback after the events of the movie. From the looks of things, they've even expanded their operations on Pandora. The player will naturally learn how to fight the RDA and their machines, being able to lay waste on everything from mech suits to helicopters.

At least one member of the RDA has been identified—a man named John Mercer. According to the developers, he was the one responsible for kidnapping Na'vi children (including the player character) to turn them into soldiers RDA soldiers. It is probably fair to assume that he is a major antagonist.

Ubisoft clearly channeled some of their Far Cry experience into Frontiers of Pandora . Aside from the first-person perspective and open world, the player has access to a variety of options when it comes to combat. Players can choose to be stealthy or go into full Rambo mode.

RELATED: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Has to Avoid One Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Problem

Weapons are quite varied as well. Thanks to her unique background, the protagonist can handle different types of firearms, or she can go for a quieter approach with a bow and arrow, or combine them with explosive arrows. A big part of the appeal of Far Cry is the variety of weapons and ways to accomplish tasks. It looks like Frontiers of Pandora is going to deliver.

A big theme in the movie was the interconnectedness of Pandora's ecosystem. The Na'vi held a deep connection to it both figuratively and literally. The braids on the back of their heads could literally be connected to Pandora's wildlife, like a USB cable.

Of course, this detail has led to a lot of ridicule, but it is something the game seems to be taking full advantage of. Part of the player character's journey will involve learning to ride different types of animals, a bit like the override mechanic in the Horizon games. This means being able to ride some of the iconic creatures from the movie.

The big thing that's been promised from the game is the Ikran, a large winged creature that develops a bond with the player. This flying mount is fully customizable, and can even be named.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to release in December 2023.

MORE: [https://Optimusgolfers.com/ avatar Pandora game]: Frontiers of Pandora Reveals Release Date and Open World Co-Op
