Few games in recent memory have been able to create such a fully realized world with so much visual flair and potential as CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 . A handful of its characters such as Judy Alvarez are beacons of what this story and the world can be at its best. But one of the biggest missed opportunities lies within the game’s own DNA. While it’s namesake and overall influences may be inspired by the cyberpunk genre, it often feels as though it never truly commits to the deeper implications of the world it’s creating or the weighty ideas it hints at within its narrative.

Cyberpunk is inherently political and rife with social commentary. While Cyberpunk 2077, unfortunately, opts to mainly introduce potentially big philosophical ideas, these ideas simply feel as if they become afterthoughts shortly after. With that being said, the genre itself leaves a lot of room for interpretation so not every single piece of media necessarily has to be a deep and incisive deconstruction of societal issues and the human condition

The cyberpunk genre has existed in some capacity for nearly as long as science fiction itself has existed. Although the term itself didn’t become a staple until the 1980s, many earlier examples are present throughout media that predate the terminology. The works of science fiction writers Isaac Asimov and Philip K. Dick , to name a few, were some of the earliest examples of what would eventually be considered cyberpunk. Their stories often existed on the fringes of science fiction and delved into topics regarding artificial intelligence, government omnipotence, corporate corruption as well as the nature of consciousness, and what it means to be human in a technological world.

[pullquote]The cyberpunk genre has become as ubiquitous as other sub-categories within science fiction such as space opera and alien invasion stories.[/pullquote]

Anime has also been a major player when it comes to the growing popularity in those early years. Major releases like Akira , Appleseed , and Ghost in the Shell have all become staples over the years in numerous science fiction stories within the cyberpunk genre at large.

Over the last few decades, cyberpunk has become even more widespread and has gained recognition in mainstream media. Films like Blade Runner , The Matrix Trilogy , Alita: Battle Angel and even Her to name a few have been strong examples of how the genre has become a mainstay in Hollywood culture. All of which are films that I adore. This is really just the tip of the iceberg as there are constantly new cyberpunk stories being brought to life every few months. The cyberpunk genre has become as ubiquitous as other sub-categories within science fiction such as space opera and alien invasion stories.

Video games have had just as many prolific entries as Hollywood and anime have. There are far too many to even mention offhand, but there are numerous that have become classics on par with the best that the genre has to offer. Titles like Deus Ex , System Shock , and of course Final Fantasy VII are just a fraction of the presence of cyberpunk within the gaming world. Players have frequently taken to immersing themselves in these stories and worlds.

Cyberpunk 2077 is truly no different in that regard. The number of stories that utilize the staples of a striking visual style and themes that are often presented in the genre is literally limitless. Players, as well as developers, have always taken to cyberpunk. It truly is open to so many different interpretations which makes its uses limitless.

As narratively different as all of the stories I've mentioned may be, they all have something in common. They all strike a balance between striking visuals and stories that have something to say. Those two points are often the hallmarks of the best cyberpunk media. They are often a happy medium of that visual style, including, but not limited to neon-drenched cityscapes, transhumanist aesthetics such as body modification, and the mixture of corporate propaganda and dark dingy city slums. Those are just some of the broadest strokes of what a lot of these worlds contain within them, but they are often very prevalent.

As far as the stories go, all of the aforementioned narratives have themes that are not foreign to this genre. Themes including corporate corruption, the revolution of the lower classes, artificial intelligence, and the meaning of consciousness are all some of the most commonly touched on topics.

[pullquote]The number of stories that utilize the staples of a striking visual style and themes that are often presented in the genre is literally limitless.[/pullquote]

So how does this circle back to Cyberpunk 2077 ? Cyberpunk easily falls into the genre that it gains its namesake from. That much is immediately apparent. From a visual standpoint, it ticks all of those boxes. You’ve got your neon city aesthetic and your ever-prevalent body modifications as a visual motif as well as a gameplay mechanic. All things that are admittedly cool as hell. I think everyone can appreciate that at its best, Cyberpunk 2077 nails that style. But it falters in other aspects that make cyberpunk a genre that resonates with people so well. It may have that signature visual flourish, but it often feels like it's lacking in its story.

Don't get me wrong, the story isn't bad. It was honestly a fairly enjoyable experience that offered a handful of hours to get lost in. The issue I found was the way it developed and hinted at some heavier ideas and social commentaries before more or less abandoning them. That wouldn't necessarily be an issue had the game's narrative not played with some of these themes and set up these potential plot points. Now not every cyberpunk story is a deep deconstruction of our times, and nor does every story in the genre need to be. The issue more so arises when these ideas are brought to the forefront and then pushed aside.

We're going to get into a few spoilers for some of the major plot points of Cyberpunk 2077 so proceed at your own risk.

[pullquote]The implications of a mega-corporation with its hands in law enforcement alone should arise its own slew of ethical questions. But in the game's world and story, it's more of an afterthought.[/pullquote]

Night City itself is very much controlled by mega-corporations that have largely free rein to do as they please outside of the law. In the early hours of Cyberpunk 2077 , you're immediately brought into a plot revolving around corporate corruption and a violent hostile takeover. In one of the opening missions, your avatar, V witnesses the murder of the head of the Arasaka Corporation. This event serves as the catalyst to most of what comes beyond that point in the story.

The company has its hands in nearly every industry imaginable. Weapons manufacturing, banking, as well as financing its own division of Night City's own police department. All of these coupled together are constant obstacles and causes for concern for V, and most of the people of Night City. The implications of a mega-corporation with its hands in law enforcement alone should arise its own slew of ethical questions. But in the [https://Testifix.com/ CyberpunkPulse Game Site]'s world and story, it's more of an afterthought.

This could have been an opportunity to pose some serious questions about corporations meddling in industries that could be a conflict of interest. Instead is just kind of a known quantity in the plot that feels as if it’s just there to cause headaches for the protagonist. I would have appreciated seeing more of this explored as opposed to it being abandoned for less intriguing plot lines.

[pullquote]The ethical implications of a program that could more or less erase a person's consciousness from their body are vast. You would think that it would be a much bigger topic of debate. Instead, Cyberpunk 2077 only tells you this is unethical without ever effectively diving deeper into it.[/pullquote]

I believe the most disappointing aspect of Cyberpunk 2077's narrative is the story revolving around Keanu Reeves' character of Johnny Silverhand. Silverhand and his involvement with Soulkiller —the game's main McGuffin— are full of massive cyberpunk themes that are not fully explored. Soulkiller essentially is a device that can be used to create a backup of a person's consciousness. The technology is considered to be extremely unethical as it not only can house a consciousness within it, but it essentially renders the host body lifeless. Thus the aptly chosen name of Soulkiller.

As the events of the story unfold, Johnny Silverhand's consciousness becomes trapped within V's own brain via a damaged biochip implant. Based on player choice, the ending you see could unfold in a few different ways. V could concede to Johnny and allow him to essentially remove their consciousness from the body leaving Johnny in command. Alternatively, V could also continue in control of the body but only for that body to deteriorate over time.

The ethical implications of a program that could more or less erase a person's consciousness from their body are vast. You would think that it would be a much bigger topic of debate. Instead, Cyberpunk 2077 only tells you this is unethical without ever effectively diving deeper into it. And therein lies the problem with a lot of the game's narrative. These ideas are frequently brought up and teased as major plot lines only for them to just be afterthoughts in favor of action set pieces.

As I said previously, this wouldn't be as much of an issue if the narrative chose a direction to stick with. You can have your big fun bombastic cyberpunk adventure and still explore the philosophical aspects. But these philosophical themes would have been better left on the cutting room floor as opposed to being teased and not explored more closely.

A film with a very similar idea is Upgrade . The story there follows Grey after he is implanted with an AI that is ultimately vying to take control of his body. I couldn't help but be reminded of that film while experiencing Cyberpunk 2077 . Both stories touch on the nature of consciousness and implanted personas. Upgrade just happens to handle it with a more nuanced and incisive hand. It does this while still managing to be an entertaining techno-thriller, and it left me feeling the way I had hoped Cyberpunk would leave me feeling.

When it's all said and done, Cyberpunk 2077 proved to be a fun sci-fi romp. But it could have been more. At times it even tried to be. Unfortunately, it just could not stick the landing when it came to those themes. Instead, it opted to be a kind of mindless action thriller which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The story is marred by what could have been and the potential that it sadly squanders. It's in no way a bad story but it is not as imaginative or as deep as it could have been.

And the issue there is that sometimes it thinks it's being deeper and edgier than it actually is. With more story well on the way in future patches , we could see a turnaround. And that's something I am honestly looking forward to seeing. I'm still excited to see more of this world and how the future could change the fate of Night City.

**Cyberpunk 2077 ** asks players to make many tough decisions, and some of them affect which characters can be saved. Death is frequently a part of life in Night City, and trying to save people can feel like fighting a losing battle, especially when V's best friend dies in Cyberpunk 2077 's first act . However, there are still some Cyberpunk 2077 characters whose lives can be saved by V's actions, even if the solution isn't always obvious.

In Cyberpunk 2077 , Night City is overrun by gangs, and corporations are waging war with each other on the streets, so civilians are frequently casualties of the overwhelming violence. The NCPD is hopelessly corrupt, and politicians are more concerned with gaining power than saving their city, so mercenaries like V sometimes end up playing the unlikely role of hero to the common people.

Related: Hideo Kojima's Cyberpunk 2077 Cameo Explained: Where He Is & Why

Though V can't help every NPC in Cyberpunk 2077 , their choices and actions in the [https://Testifix.com/ CyberpunkPulse Game Blog] can still have a positive effect. Barry tells V that his best friend, Andrew, has died. In order to prevent Barry from committing suicide, V needs to investigate Andrew’s memorial, where they’ll find out Andrew is a tortoise. Then V needs to explain everything to Barry’s friends, including the fact that Andrew is a tortoise - otherwise, they won’t realize how much help Barry needs. If V waits too long to go to the memorial or doesn’t tell Barry’s friends the whole story, the quest will automatically fail after a certain amount of time, indicating Barry has died.

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Brick In "The Pickup"

" The Pickup " is a Cyberpunk 2077 main-story ques t involving a Militech bot V needs to acquire from Maelstrom. V has several decisions to make in this questline, but no matter what, they’ll end up fighting their way out of the building. Before they leave, though, V can rescue Brick, the former leader of Maelstrom. He’s located in the northern corner of the All Foods warehouse, and V needs to either hack the door or find the code on a computer in the adjacent room. Next, they’ll just have to disarm the laser mine preventing Brick from leaving.

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Gilchrist Or Meredith In "The Pickup"

In Cyberpunk 2077 's " The Pickup " mission , V's decision to side with either Maelstrom or Militech will determine which of the Militech agents survives. After meeting with agent Meredith Stout, if V uses the infected credit chip to pay for the bot or chooses to attack Maelstrom, Meredith will prevail over Gilchrist. If V clears the credit chip or pays for the Flathead with their own money and sides with Maelstrom, then Gilchrist will take over, and Meredith will die.

Related: How to Romance Meredith Stout in Cyberpunk 2077

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Garry In "The Prophet’s Song"

Garry the Prophet is a homeless man who stands outside of Misty’s Esoterica and rants about fantastical conspiracy theories. After the fifth time V speaks to Garry, a couple of Nomads start harassing him. If V doesn’t intervene, they’ll kill Garry. The Nomads will appear if V gets anywhere close to Garry after the fifth conversation, even if V is inside Misty’s Esoterica getting a tarot reading, so it’s important that players are prepared to handle the situation. Ultimately, Garry ends up disappearing at the end of " The Prophet's Song ," no matter what V does, but at least his mission can still be carried out by his disciples.

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Blue Moon In "Every Breath You Take"

This quest only becomes available if V makes the correct decisions in " I Don’t Wanna Hear It ." V must approach the Us Cracks calmly, otherwise the player will be locked out of the " Every Breath You Take " mission. After V finds the stalker who’s planning to hurt Blue Moon, they’ll have the option to spare her life, which means V can technically save two characters in this quest.

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Takemura In "Search And Destroy"

The " Search and Destroy " main quest ends with V needing to fight their way out of a building. If they do so without finding Takemura first, he will die. There isn’t a quest objective telling V to find him, though, so players will need to remember to search for him before they leave. V can find Takemura by backtracking through the building until they find a slightly hidden hole in the wall. V and Takemura can then escape together, and Takemura can participate in the game's ending (depending on which path V takes, of course).

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Voodoo Boys In "I Walk The Line"

During the " I Walk the Line " main quest, V will be approached by a Netwatch agent who wants V to betray the Voodoo Boys in order to keep the net safer. If V agrees, during the following quest (" Transmission "), Netwatch will appear in the subnet the Voodoo Boys create for V, and all of the Voodoo Boys will die. V can still achieve their goals, either way, and the Voodoo Boys aren’t exactly good guys, so it’s up to players to decide who to support.

Related: Which Gang Players Should Work With in Cyberpunk 2077

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Frank In "War Pigs"

The " War Pigs " mission is only available if V chose Cyberpunk 2077 's Corpo lifepath . The hospital employee betrays V, leading to a firefight. After the fight, V can choose to either kill the hospital employee or let them go, and either way, they get the implant. But if V lets the hospital employee live, V will find out it has a computer virus on it that needs to be removed before it’s implanted in the Aldecaldos kid. If V kills the hospital employee, they won’t find out about the virus, and the Nomad kid will die.

How To Save Cyberpunk 2077's Delamain AIs In "Don’t Lose Your Mind"

After V completes Cyberpunk 2077 's " Epistrophy " side quests , Delamain needs help dealing with the sentient AIs that are wreaking havoc on the Delamain core. There are three options: reset the core, destroy the core, or merge the core. If V resets the core, all of the sentient AIs will be destroyed. If V merges the core, all of the sentient AIs are incorporated into the main Delamain core, so they lose their independence but technically still live. The best course of action is to destroy the core, which allows the sentient AIs to exist independently and Delamain to function properly - plus, Johnny will approve.

[https://Testifix.com/ Cyberpunk 2077 beginner guide] 2077 is filled with powerful and often terrifying gangs. But some of them are much less powerful than they seem, while others are deadlier than V could ever imagine. One of the best things about the controversy-filled game is its use of gangs and the side jobs that teach the player about the dangers Night City faces, as well as the wide variety of gangs and corporations within this messed-up city.

While all the gangs in [https://Testifix.com/ Cyberpunk 2077 patch notes] 2077 are scary, not all of them have the power they crave. Many are still building themselves up when V graces the city, others are coaxed along with the help of the player and other gangs have been rampant on the streets for decades, causing them to strike fear in the hearts of innocent people. However, fear doesn't always mean power, and sometimes being unknown is the best way to be.

Updated on February 5, 2024 by Ritwik Mitra: Cyberpunk 2077 has enjoyed an amazing redemption after being dragged across the proverbial coals for months/years following one of the most disastrous launches in video game history. Thankfully, CD Projekt Red admitted its faults and [https://Testifix.com/ CyberpunkPulse Gaming] spent years updating the game, adding new content, and fixing most of its bugs. With the advent of Phantom Liberty and the 2.0 Update, Cyberpunk 2077 completed its comeback, entering into the good graces of fans once again. It's easily one of the best sci-fi RPGs fans can check out, and the immense detail in Night City coupled with the many gangs present in the game makes this urban landscape come to life in a vivid and violent way.

Leader: Susie "Q"

Gang Strength: 200-250

The Mox is one of the smaller, newer, and kinder gangs that easily has the best morals and goals, although getting on their bad side is a true rollercoaster. The gang was founded in memory of Lizzie Borden , a strip club owner who dedicated her life to protecting the vulnerable from violence and dangers, specifically sex workers.

Unfortunately, The Moxes' small numbers and brand of protection force them to be rather low down on the power scale. While they don't shy away from some dodgy deals and a bit of violence, their cause isn't to punish the innocent or large groups of people, unless they deserve it.

The starting mission of the Corpo Lifepath, The Corpo-Rat , sees the player start off their journey at Lizzie's Bar.

In The Information , V needs to pay a visit to Lizzie's Bar and have a discussion with Evelyn Parker.

Leader: Sasquatch

Gang Strength: 2,500-3,000

The Animals are a gang that mainly works as bouncers and bodyguards throughout Night City, so they mainly focus on making themselves look as intimidating as possible, much like Arasaka . While it's undeniable that their presence is noted when the player tries to get into a club, they don't exactly hold a ton of power.

They have a lot of members, ranging from 2,500 to 3,000. At the end of the day, they work for the more powerful gangs inside the bars and clubs they guard or beat people up for. While they're intimidating, they don't call the shots and are still trying to work their way up the ladder.

One of the harder fights in Beat on the Brat sees V fight off against a buff member of the Animals, Rhino.

In I Walk the Line , V needs to infiltrate the GIM that is occupied by the Animals.

Leader: Numerous

Gang Strength: Unknown

Scavengers do as their name dictates, they scavenge implants off anyone they can get their hands on so they can sell them on for some quick money. They care little about who their victim is and attack anyone from corporate bosses to innocent bystanders. This makes them heavily feared and somewhat powerful since no one is safe, but ultimately they aren't the ones who hold all the power.

They have no turf to call their own, instead roaming the streets for the hunt and a prime victim. If it ever came down to one gang ruling the whole of Night City , many players and citizens would not back this gang since they ultimately just roam the streets like common thieves and murderers, they have no say in what happens to this crazy place.

The first quest after the Lifepath prologue, Breaking Through , has V infiltrating a Scav hideout to rescue Sandra Dorsett.

Disasterpiece sees V infiltrate a Scav building to rescue Evelyn.

Leader: Gustavo Orta & Zoe Alonzo

Gang Strength: 6,000

The Valentinos are certainly well-known and respected. They are surprisingly well-loved in Heywood due to their street parties, drag races , and other activities to keep the locals entertained and happy. What they lack in power they make up for in respect and numbers with their estimated gang size being around 6,000 people.

While they are fun and relatively kind to those who don't cause them trouble, they just don't hold the kind of power many would have liked to see. Nevertheless, their devotion and numbers make them tough to mess with.

In the gig On a Tight Leash , V uncovers a conspiracy involving a collusion between the Valentinos and Arasaka to frame Militech.

During the funeral for Jackie in the quest Heroes, the leader of the Valentinos sends his regards through a member of the gang.

Leader: Saul Bright (and possibly Panam Palmer)

Gang Strength: 10,000+ (500-600 in Night City)

The beloved Aldecaldos Of The Badlands. Many players adore this gang and its resident troublemaker Panam Palmer. While this gang only has around 500-600 members in the Night City area, it dominates a little part of the outskirts.

They love causing trouble to corporations and are usually willing to do most jobs if the person is willing to pay. They don't hold a vast amount of land and aren't typically interested in expanding into Night City which allows them to stay in the middle of the power ladder. That seems to suit them fine.

Various quests with Panam involve the Aldecados in a major capacity, including Queen Of The Highway .

V can give an explosive send-off to Mitch's fallen comrade, Scorpion, in I'll Fly Away .

Leader: Will Gunner

Gang Strength: 2,300

6th Street is a rather ironic group that became the thing they swore to destroy. Their military-style gang stood in and fought for justice when the NCPD refused to . However, in their attempts, they became self-righteous and selfless as they took over Santo Domingo .

Owning this amount of turf comes with a strong element of power as well as all the military training they possess. They have all the means to expand and take over more power and will more than likely attempt it. The scary thing is that they may just succeed with how ruthless they can be.

In Stadium Love , V can either engage in a shootout with 6th Street or partake in a shooting competition. Players who get all points get a special SMG called "Divided We Stand".

In the gig Life's Work , V will need to steal a custom car from a client that's being guarded by members of 6th Street.

Leader: Dogkiller

Gang Strength: 300-1,200

The Wraiths may not seem particularly powerful inside Night City, but outside, they are feared, respected, and avoided at all costs. Consisting of 300 - 1,200 members, this gang of exiled nomads roams the outskirts of the city causing terror and destruction in their wake with their violent raid parties.

Although they aren't prominent inside Night City, they almost own the entire outskirts and could certainly pack a punch if they chose to expand their turf. With their scary outfits and violent tendencies, they certainly don't fly under the radar and many players have had some scary run-ins with this intimidating gang.

The gig Big Pete's Got Big Problems has V break into a garage populated by Wraiths to prevent Pete from working with them.

In Riders on the Storm, V needs to infiltrate a Wraith stronghold to rescue Saul.

Leader: Brigitte & Wilky Laguerre

Gang Strength: 50-250

Many gangs that skulk around Night City are vicious, violent, and often so teched up that they're nearly impossible to kill. The Voodoo Boys are the opposite. They're hackers and netrunners who, in a world as tech-orientated as this, are beyond dangerous.

They may seem under the surface but if they so desired, and put all their skills together, it would be devastating for all gangs, corporations, and civilians since their opportunities are essentially endless. They could hack into information, install malware into a human being, and cause all amounts of devastation. Ultimately, for V, the Voodoo Boys aren't the biggest threat, but this gang wields more power than many think.

Players interact with the Voodoo Boys in a close capacity in M'ap Tann Pelen .

Another main mission, Transmission , sees V working with the Voodoo Boys once again.

Leader: Royce, Brick, or Patricia (dependent on a player's actions)

Gang Strength: 1,300

Maelstrom is the more reputable and feared gang in the game. They dominate most of Watson and seem to have a hand in almost every job V takes part in. Their name is mentioned more times than anyone could count since they run most operations in Night City and that's all because they are just so deadly and feared by anyone living in that odd and run-down city.

Maelstrom is one of the most powerful gangs in the game and is certainly tough to deal with even with a population of around 1,300. They are techno-loving machines who implant their bodies with powerful and illegal cyberware , often making them quick, deadly, and almost unstoppable. If this gang wanted to take over Night City, many would probably just let them.

One of the first main quests, The Pickup , has players negotiate a deal with Maelstrom that can have wildly different conclusions.

The events of this quest govern how Second Conflict plays out, with V going to the Maelstrom club, Totentanz.

Leader: Jun Azegami & Marcus Ichida

Gang Strength: 5,500

This may come as a surprise that the Tyger Claws are the most powerful gang in Cyberpunk 2077, but the biggest tell-tale sign is who they get funded by. First of all, they're a gang of around 5,500 deadly trained assassins. Secondly, they own Westbrook, Japantown, Charter Hill, Watson, Kabuki, and Little China. Thirdly, they are funded by the one and only Arasaka!

Being a gang funded by the biggest company in the country is an insane boost to power, especially since they get access to military-grade cyberware , weapons, data, and top jobs that cause their power to increase rapidly. The Tyger Claws fly under the radar but are incredibly powerful. Once you mess with them, you have the entire gang and an entire company ready to make this day your last.

V interacts with the higher-up of the Tyger Claws in Pisces .

The quest The Highwayman rewards players with a unique Tyger Claw motorcycle upon completion.
